to shop / a look at old navy spring 2015

I love Old Navy‘s spring collection. It reminds me that bare legs and warmer weather isn’t too far away, and it is super affordable*. They tend to use breathable fabrics like cotton and rayon for warm weather styles, unlike some other lower cost brands that go heavy on polyester (*cough* F21). The quality isn’t amazing but it’s good enough — I have yet to see anything fall apart under multi-season use. Many items come in petite and tall sizing and are lined, which makes it work appropriate. My favorites so far are the dresses in the first row and the chambray shirt and sweater in the third row.

*There was a 40% off promotion last week for cardholders. The current promotion is 35% off for Old Navy and Gap with code DAYLIGHT through Monday, March 9, 11:59 ET. I’m a big Gap Inc. fan — the Gap credit card is totally worth it.

Some of these items come in other colors, but of course I picked my favorite colors to display here.

Split Back Dress ($63) / Pleated Shirt Dress (back shown) ($38) / Dress with Caped Back* (back shown) ($27) / Tie Back Dress** ($27)
A-line Dress ($30) / Oversized Jersey Top ($15) / Striped Cotton Top ($30) / Silk Front Jersey Top ($50) / Layered Dress ($30)

COS has marked down its sale items! COS is one of my favorite stores, yet I’ve never blogged about it. I discovered it in Munich back in ’08 when I was on vacation and dragged my friend there for an hour every night (after sightseeing) until closing time. Why an hour? Because I like completeness and I needed repeat trips to fawn over everything. I consider the style to be clean, relaxed, and casual elegance. While their US online store has been open since May, I find their sizing inconsistent and prefer the in-store experience, and have never ordered online prior to this sale. Items in the store are organized by color and nicely styled whereas the online store takes a Zara approach. Everything looks so boxy and miss some defining details! I wouldn’t have considered some of the dresses below had I not seen it in person and specifically looked for it online. I make it a point to visit a COS whenever I’m out of town — Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Paris, London, Barcelona, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore — and am happy to see some of the styles I was fawning over in April and July in Asia have been drastically reduced. The US store is scheduled to open in December in NYC.

to shop / uniqlo x o’2nd

I’ve never heard of the high-end Korean brand, O’2nd, before, but they are currently collabing with Uniqlo and I love the look of the dresses. The dresses range from $29.90 – 39.90, come with belts (I wonder if they are removeable?), and most dresses are a cotton blend which is great for the summer heat.

I’m not sure when I’m going to check it out in person, but let me know if you beat me to it!

Read Part I here.

Gap has extended their Friends and Family 30% off sale through Monday. Use code GAPFRIENDS for 30% off and don’t forget eBates! Gap has 2% back and Piperlime has 7% back. I’m experimenting with checking out through Piperlime…

I always look forward to the Spring collections. It usually means the return of 100% cotton clothing at Old Navy and Gap. I loved Gap’s shirtdresses from last Spring. Sifting through the overabundance of shirtdresses for this season, these are my favorites. All of them come in tall lengths. Pair it with a thin belt, strappy sandals, a straw hat, and a casual purse and you’re ready to go!

It’s important to find dresses that are breathable 100% cotton and not viscose or polyester in anticipation of the steamy summer days. I also like these other non-shirtdresses, but I regret to inform that the one on the left is polyester (I swear it used to say cotton!).

Previously featured in this series: the shirtdress and the ballet flat.

Gap’s been knocking out a series of striped dresses and I’ve tried every one of ’em.

  • The first incarnation came out in late Winter 2012 and was made of non-preshrunk ponte knit, that’s right, preshrunk. I shrunk one by accident because I stupidly decided to put it in the dryer and it shrunk! I did manage to secure another one, but I have some plans to save the shrunken version.
  • The latter versions came in a heavier rugby cotton or a slub material. I favored ponte because it is soft, rather lightweight and therefore seasonless, and easy to throw on under a blazer and over tights. Rugby is too heavy for the summer.

The current edition is the nautical shift, on the righthand side of the picture. The zipper detail on the shoulder makes it slightly trendier. Since all of these dresses shrink slightly in the wash, I highly recommend the tall sizes if you want a more conservative skirt length (I’m still talking about above the knee). You can also see that I’m not the only person who opts for the tall length… most of it has sold out! Continue reading “to shop / {gap favorites} the striped knit dress”

to shop / {gap favorites} the shirtdress

I got a shirtdress earlier in the season from Gap – pintucked and white. It brought me through many hot and sticky days in Asia. Some of my favorite summer basics have been from Gap because they use a lot of cotton. Other brands, even sister brand Old Navy and Anthropologie, have too many clothes with synthetic content. While polyester can be easy to maintain, it’s not breathable, especially in the heat of the summer.

The shirtdress is such a versatile, basic piece and Gap knows it too since the below image showed up in my email today. The accessorizing possibilities are endless. Who else remembers Rachel McAdams’ shirtdresses from Midnight in Paris?
