Petit Bateau tees have been a wardrobe staple of mine for over 10 years. I’d read about the women’s line of the French company who’s known for baby and child clothing in Vogue in the pre-blog days. In more recent years, they’ve added styles for men. I have mentioned them over the years, but this is my first proper review.

I’ve been taking R&R in Taipei and didn’t bring a laptop with me. After a week of detoxing from a computer, I itched to write real emails and keyboard shortcut my way through my inbox.
- I’ve been indulging in super affordable tui na and acupuncture and will be sad to give them up once I return home.
- I’ve come to the conclusion that most food in Taipei is good – no matter where you go. I’m not as diligent in exploring Taipei food options because there are family obligations and because I’m content.
- Yelp just launched in Taiwan. It’s too new to be of substantial value though. Foursquare was in use.
- I’ve been thinking of purging (and I’ve been talking about it for years but time has always been a deterrent) and browsed through Marie Kondo’s much talked about book. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve gotten wiser about purchases so there is a lot less to buy in Hong Kong and Taipei. So far.
- If you have any recommendations for items to buy from Taipei (or Narita airport), let me know! I always end up in Muji and Watson’s for hours. Even though I can read traditional Chinese, it is more tiring. Thus, it’s harder to find reviews on products.
I. Shopping
- Get $10 off your first $50+ order at Peach and Lily!
- I always stop at the original Sogo department store in Taipei and did a walkthrough of the first floor, which I usually do not do. They have a HUGE selection of Repetto ballet flats — I think it rivaled the flagship in Paris and definitely beat any US retail outlet. Retail pricing is hefty but there were a bunch of styles that were 40% off.
- I tried on the new pointed ‘Brigitte’ style (currently 25% off through link). It runs TTS and I never realized before the bow could be tightened. If feels different than the Cendrillon ballet flat due to the lack of curve. It’s currently online at:
- Bloomingdales, 25% off, in black calf leather.
- Farfetch, in black patent and navy calf leather. I’ve never shopped here before; the price is inclusive of shipping and duty.
- I also saw a black rubber version of the popular Cendrillon style — perfect for drizzly weather — but I can’t seem to find it online.
- A Repetto store is rumored to be opening in Soho, NYC this year…
- I tried on the new pointed ‘Brigitte’ style (currently 25% off through link). It runs TTS and I never realized before the bow could be tightened. If feels different than the Cendrillon ballet flat due to the lack of curve. It’s currently online at:
- Petit Bateau private sale up to 70% off. 3 days left. Sizes are limited.
- Two thumbs up to the Better Business Bureau! I’d purchased something from a popular home decor e-tailer. I got tired after waiting an year for a backorder and they didn’t respond to my emails. It was too far back for me to contest with my credit card. I filed a case on BBB, who then forwarded it to the local BBB. The e-tailer took immediate action. The e-tailer has similar bad reviews on BBB, so buyer beware.
II. Other
I am not categorizing for the sake of time. I will say that I really wish more RSS feeds didn’t force me to click to their site to read because now I have an exorbitant amount of saved items. I spent a good deal of time bookmarking instead of reading on my flight here. Or is there a way to easily bookmark into folders, on the iPhone, while offline?
- Dodie Thayer for Tory Burch — lettuce dinnerware
- Google’s new female CFO
- Amazon in talks to acquire Net-a-Porter.
- Baggu posted production videos on their Instagram! I never knew their factory was in China, but it doesn’t make a difference to me. (One, Two, Three, Four)
- Salt therapy for the sickly.
- Lilly Pulitzer x Target drops April 19.
- I love Emily Henderson and some of her Target picks. I’ve been staying away from Target for the last few months… Resistance is futile.
- Marc by Marc Jacobs to be discontinued. This is sad news for me as a fan of their ballet flats and clothing (on sale only). Although I have lost interest since I stopped browsing.
- If you case you haven’t heard, Target’s new return policy is one year!
- I can’t remember the last time I professed love for Banana Republic, so the new lower Fifth Ave, Marissa Webb-blessed flagship merits a visit. Dough is nearby 🙂
III. Watching
- I detest inefficient browsing. Enter Netflix God Mode. I usually add to my queue on the desktop. (PSFK)
- How long it takes to binge watch a show. (via Apartment Therapy)
- I’ve also been on a TV detox, but can’t wait to dig into:
- Mad Men, last season (AMC)
- Orphan Black, starting April 18 (BBC US)
- Grimm, returns (NBC)
- Call the Midwife, Mr. Selfridge, Wolf Hall (PBS)

to shop / {high & low} petit bateau mariniere vs lord & taylor bateau top
Petit Bateau mariniere ($102)
Lord & Taylor cotton bateau neck top ($29.99, pre-20% discount listed on site)
Lord & Taylor has great sales. It’s too bad their site is so hard to navigate and checkout, so if do not have patience, it’s best to stay away. Consider yourself warned.
I love striped shirts. I especially like these L&T tops because they are 100% cotton (typically anything with other content gets dingy after a few washes and I appreciate durability), have 3/4 sleeves (great for my petite length arms), and they are mid-weight (perfect for layering and doesn’t show each lump and bump). I tried both XS and S and think I’m going to go with S, especially if they shrink a little. If you have a ShopRunner account (which was heavily pushed by Amex last holiday season), link your account for free 2 day shipping and returns.
They are much more affordable than the Petit Bateau marinieres (which does go on sale), but the PB tops have a much heavier weight (no summer or spring wear), cut much slimmer, and have long sleeves.

to shop / weekend sales (petit bateau, skincarerx, zara, and shoes!)
Get 25% off sale items at Petit Bateau through Sunday, July 14 with code EXTRA25. I’m a die hard fan of their t-shirts. I’ve worn a variation since 2004. My current favorite are the boatneck tees I previously mentioned, but are no longer sold. Good thing I kind of stocked up? The extra 25% makes the prices pretty reasonable… of course you cannot compare with prices in France. The PB website also leaves much to be desired in terms of styling, product pictures, and basic website functionalities! If you’re looking for modeling pictures, check the French site where the images above are from. Their sizing chart is pretty accurate, but sizing may vary between style.
My picks: Floral rabbit, the Kitsune Mariniere Top, Classic Black V-Neck Top, Colorblock Cardigan (also comes in Tiffany blue…). See all sale items.
If you missed the SkinCareRX sale last month, they are still having some great deals:
- $40 rebate on all orders over $125 through Sunday, July 15. See my rec’s here.
- $25 rebate on all Colorescience orders over $75 through August 31, 2013. On top of that, get another 22% back on all Colorescience products with code COLORMAY22 through Monday, July 16.
I don’t think the two rebates can be combined, but it never hurts to ask.
Zara‘s semiannual sale continues on. Like Forever 21, Zara is a retailer where it’s easy to rack up a bunch of purchases that ultimately have no long term viability, which I really do not like. I’ve unknowingly gone on a Forever 21 and Zara fast, so let’s see if I cave. I was keeping tabs on this lightweight trench coat, since it reminded me of the Baukjen Jodie Trench, but my size ran out and I think it’s still a far stretch from Jodie. I adore Baukjen’s fit and quality. The basic thong sandals (above) look like a great, affordable ($19.99!) alternative to the K. Jacques Delta sandal. I wonder if it’s durable enough for a walk around the city!
Shoescribe is owned by Yoox (which I’ve been avoiding because it’s addicting and time consuming) and has an pretty good shoe sale going on. As someone who doesn’t wear heels often, here are my favorite brands:
- Ferragamos.
- Chloe. Including the wildly popular scalloped ballet flats, in a neutral!
- Anniel. I think they’re the largest distributor of Anniel in the US! Might I add that I can’t explain why I really want a pair of flats with metallic stars, but will probably never go for it?
- Melissa. Includes Jason Wu and Vivienne Westwood Anglomania.
- Marc by Marc Jacobs. One of my favorite ballet flats brands.
- McQ Alexander McQueen.
- Porselli. This brand was recently picked up by J.Crew.
- Adidas. Special collabs.
to shop / striped top roundup
(Left to right, top to bottom)
- (-) Demylee Roderick tee. 100% pima, really soft, but runs big and long. Downer: hang dry.
- (+) Petit Bateau mariniere. As mentioned here. Heavyweight and fitted.
- (-) PLAY Comme des Garçons stripe heart tee. Lighter than all the other tops here. Runs small. Not worth the price.
- (-) J.Crew side-seam top. Heavyweight and fitted, but too boxy. Looks much better online.
- (+) Talbots striped Audrey sweater. Lightweight sweater, but not see-through. This was a great buy on sale. Runs TTS to big.
- (+) Forever 21 Classic Striped 3/4 Sleeve Top. A great buy. Midweight, somewhat fitted, and looks to be of good quality.
- (+) Baukjen Pippa Stripe Tee. I got this top in caramel and black. It runs small and pretty long. Lightweight (viscose blend).
- (-) StyleMint Dalton T. Runs big and long (much longer than pictured). It is 100% cotton though. This needs to go back.
to shop / petit bateau mariniere striped tee & more
I’m pretty obsessed with French label, Petit Bateau. They’re having a secret sale and their classic mariniere is 70% off! You can also check out the rest of the sale here. There are plenty of deeply discounted items for baby, kids, and women. PB is one of my favorite brands to gift for friends with babies.
Some other sales to note:
- Steven Alan’s online sample sale is ending tonight. They restocked since pre-sale and day 1.
- ISAAY has a 70% off section, including Inhabit cashmere. You cannot stack the discount with any vouchers. It is a little stale, in my opinion, but you may find something you like!
- Refinery29 Shops has a $50 for $100 Club Monaco online credit offer going on. Limit 2 per person. Expiration unknown, but it may sell out soon.
to shop / marinière & stripes
While I love lace, polka dots, and marinière stripes, my love for the former two are waning. I think stripes are the most versatile print of the three. I think I’m far from getting sick of stripes — I picked up five striped tops in Paris! Each interpretation was so unique. Look how cheerful a striped tee makes an outfit.

to travel & shop / {november 2011} paris – petit bateau
Continuation of this Petit Bateau post.
Petit Bateau is all over Paris. I have no idea how their sales are like in Paris, but I can’t afford to wait. They were having a small promotion when I was there – 20% off two or more items, excluding anything black or blue {stripes were eligible for the promotion} – and in true Parisian fashion, it was very subtly advertised in the store. I happened to catch a glimpse of the store window on the way in and it was written on the very bottom left. I don’t know much French, but I know enough to know soldes = sale 🙂
Here are some snapshots of their tiny lookbook. Their baby/kid line is so adorable. I wish they had everything in adult sizes! {Oh wait, they do.}

to shop / {cyber monday edition} petit bateau

I have a few brands that I love love love and Petit Bateau is one of them. Any girlfriend who’s been at Chicago Premium Outlets with me knows this! I first read about their t-shirts in Vogue when I was in grade school. Many years later, I stumbled upon their amazing outlet store in the Chicago Premium Outlets. What most people don’t know is that Petit Bateau is beyond a children’s brand. They have an extensive womenswear line and have branched into menswear in recent years.
